There is no question that rugs can be an additional feature in your house. However, they can cost you more and you need to take care of them properly. These mistakes may not prolong the life of your carpets.

The first thing you have to do is to turn your carpet upside down and vacuum the whole rug. It is recommended not to use rotating or beater bar in front of the rug because you just have to use it at the back. This is because the beater bar or rotating brush can loosen up small wool if you will apply it in front of the rug which can tear your rug. However, if you have synthetic rugs, beater bar or rotating brush can be used both at the back and front part of the vacuum.

Fringes and tassels should not be vacuumed. If you will vacuum the fringes, they may get stuck in the beater bar. Hence, there is no need to vacuum the fringes. You just have to fluff them with the use of your hands. You can damage them if you will apply anything else aside from that.

You should be wary when using any shampoo for your rugs. This is because shampoos are only applied for synthetic rugs and not for wool rugs.

You should always check the labels prior to using the cleaners or shampoos. After using the cleaner or shampoo, make sure to rinse it out. The soap residue left in the rug will attract dirt.

You should immediately treat the rugs if there are spills and stains. Gently blot or scrape the spills or stains. When blotting the spills or stains, you may use a clean white and dry towel. The spills will be absorbed properly if you will continually press the towel down. You should not rub the towel in circles so that damage will be prevented. You can prevent souring of the residue if milk spills when you gently rinse it with detergent soap and water. For red wine spills, you can use hydrogen peroxide dish soap together with a cotton towel. You can also neutralize the pet odors by using white vinegar and water and press it with cotton towel.

As much as possible, you should vacuum both sides of the rugs every week. If you can do it, you should at least vacuum the rug once in every two weeks. You should not forget to rotate your rugs at least once a year.It can also be that you will arrange the whole furniture together with the rugs.

Always remember that rugs should be rolled and not be folded. When hiring upholstery cleaning or rug cleaning, the cleaners should know what they are doing. This can prevent wrinkles as folding can initiate it.
